Funeral Flower FAQ

What are the most popular flowers for funerals in Australia?

Common choices for funeral flowers include white lilies, roses, carnations, chrysanthemums, and gladioli. White lilies are a traditional favourite, symbolising peace and innocence, while roses—particularly white or red—express love and respect. Carnations, often pink for remembrance or white for purity, are also widely used. Chrysanthemums represent sympathy, and gladioli add elegance and symbolise strength. Many people also choose Australian native flowers, such as banksias or waratahs, to reflect a local connection or the deceased’s preferences.

Should I send funeral flowers to the service or to the family home?

It depends on your purpose. Funeral flowers, such as wreaths, casket sprays, or standing arrangements, are typically sent to the funeral service (e.g., funeral home, church, or cemetery) to honour the deceased during the ceremony. Sympathy flowers, like bouquets or vase arrangements, are sent to the family home as a personal gesture of condolence and support after the service. If uncertain, check the funeral notice for the family’s wishes -some may prefer donations instead - or contact us, and we’ll help you decide.

Are there specific flowers or colours I should avoid?

There are no strict rules, but it’s wise to consider cultural or religious preferences. White and pastel colours (such as soft pinks or purples) are generally safe, symbolising peace and remembrance. These suit most faiths in Australia, including Anglican, Catholic, or Baha’i. For Buddhist funerals, avoid red flowers and opt for white. Many Jewish families may prefer no flowers, favouring fruit baskets or charitable donations instead. If in doubt, our florists can advise based on the circumstances.

How much should I expect to spend on funeral flowers?

Prices vary depending on the arrangement and flower types. A simple bouquet might start at $50-$70, while a wreath or casket spray could range from $100 to $300 or more, depending on size and customisation. At The Pink Carnation, we offer options for every budget, easing the cost during a difficult time. Get in touch for a personalised quote!

When and where should I have the flowers delivered?

For funeral flowers, we recommend delivery to the funeral venue (e.g., funeral home or church) at least a few hours before the service - ideally the day prior—to ensure they’re fresh and in place. Include the deceased’s name and service details when ordering. For sympathy flowers, delivery to the family home can occur anytime after the funeral, or even a few days later as a thoughtful gesture. We offer same-day delivery across Australia if ordered by 1 PM local time, Monday to Friday (10 AM Saturdays). Let us know the details, and we’ll handle the rest!
